Shift Strategy
Revise when the transmission upshifts and downshifts so the gearbox makes better use of the available torque and driving conditions.
Improve shift behaviour, torque management and converter strategy for supported ZF 8HP applications. Suitable for owners wanting better driveability, towing behaviour or transmission calibration to match increased engine torque.
Tuned and tested by appointment at our Donnybrook workshop, servicing Bunbury and South West WA.

Support and available calibration options depend on the exact vehicle, transmission variant, mechatronic or transmission-control architecture, and software. Compatibility is confirmed before booking.
ZF 8HP transmissions are used in a wide range of vehicles, from performance sedans and SUVs through to towing and touring applications.
A good transmission calibration is not about making every shift feel harsh or aggressive. The aim is to improve how the transmission behaves for the intended use of the vehicle.
Depending on the application, transmission tuning can improve:
The result should be a transmission that feels more appropriate, more predictable and better matched to the vehicle and driver.
The available changes vary by vehicle, but these are the main areas considered during a supported ZF 8HP calibration.
Revise when the transmission upshifts and downshifts so the gearbox makes better use of the available torque and driving conditions.
Improve the decisiveness and consistency of shifts where appropriate, without turning normal driving into an unnecessarily harsh experience.
Better coordinate how engine torque is reduced or managed during shifts, especially on tuned or higher-output vehicles.
Improve torque-converter lock-up strategy to reduce unnecessary slip and make the driveline feel more direct where appropriate.
Reduce unnecessary hunting, awkward shift behaviour or lazy response that can make an otherwise capable vehicle feel less refined than it should.
For supported applications, improve how the transmission responds when the vehicle is working under load or towing.
One of the biggest benefits of ZF 8HP tuning is improved shift strategy.
Factory calibration is always a compromise between emissions, comfort, fuel economy, component protection and general-market driveability. In some vehicles this can leave the transmission feeling too eager to short-shift, too reluctant to downshift, too soft in its response or too inconsistent under changing load.
Transmission tuning can revise these strategies so the gearbox behaves more appropriately for the vehicle’s actual use.
Depending on the application, that might mean:
The factory behaviour and tuneable strategies differ between vehicles. Changes are selected for the individual application rather than applied as a universal shift pattern.

The ZF 8HP uses a torque converter with controlled lock-up strategy. Calibration can improve when and how converter lock-up is applied so the driveline feels more direct and wastes less energy through unnecessary slip.
Depending on the vehicle and use case, this can improve:
Converter operation, available calibration access and the resulting behaviour vary by application. The same outcome cannot be promised for every vehicle.
ZF 8HP tuning can be particularly valuable where engine output has been increased.
Once a vehicle produces more torque than standard, the original transmission calibration may no longer represent the best match for the driveline. Shift behaviour, torque reduction during shifts, converter operation and gearbox strategy can all benefit from recalibration.
For supported vehicles, SWTC can calibrate the transmission to better suit the engine tune and intended use. Not every tuned vehicle requires transmission tuning, but the combination often works best when engine and transmission behaviour are considered together.
Although ZF 8HP transmissions are widely associated with performance vehicles, transmission tuning can also benefit daily-driven, touring and towing applications where supported.
In these vehicles the goal is usually not a dramatic or aggressive shift feel. Instead, the focus is on:

ZF 8HP transmissions are fitted to a wide range of vehicles across different brands and generations, but support is not universal.
If your vehicle uses a ZF 8HP transmission, send us the details and we can confirm support before booking. ZF 8HP applications are found across BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover and other brands, but brand or transmission fitment alone does not confirm tuning support.
ZF 8HP tuning can be relevant for both standard vehicles and modified vehicles.
Standard vehicles may benefit from improved shift strategy, converter behaviour and general driveability.
Modified or tuned vehicles may additionally benefit from calibration changes that better suit increased engine torque and the changed driveline behaviour that comes with it.
Where a vehicle has substantial engine or hardware changes, additional assessment may be required before tuning.
SWTC does not treat tuning as simply loading a file and handing the keys back.
The exact process depends on the vehicle and available transmission support path. Existing mechanical, electrical or transmission faults need to be addressed before calibration.

Pricing starts from $660 inc GST, with final cost depending on the vehicle, transmission support path and overall calibration requirements.
Pricing applies to normal supported vehicles without unresolved mechanical, electrical or programming faults. Modified vehicles or additional diagnostic work may require separate assessment.

No. Standard vehicles can benefit from improved shift strategy and driveability, while modified vehicles may also benefit from better transmission behaviour matched to increased engine torque.
Not necessarily, nor is that the objective. A good transmission calibration should suit the vehicle and intended use. Depending on the application, shifts may feel cleaner or more decisive, but the goal is better behaviour rather than harshness for its own sake.
In supported applications, transmission calibration can help address undesirable shift strategy or general gearbox behaviour where the tuneable parameters allow it.
Yes, where supported. Converter lock-up strategy is one of the areas that can often be improved through transmission calibration.
Often, yes. Once engine torque output changes, the transmission may benefit from recalibration so shift behaviour and torque management remain well matched to the vehicle.
No. Support depends on the exact vehicle, transmission variant and software or control setup. Contact SWTC with your vehicle details and we can confirm support before booking.
In most cases, yes. We normally retain or obtain the appropriate original software so the transmission controller can be returned to its standard calibration where supported. Returning the software to standard does not necessarily erase programming records or guarantee that previous calibration changes cannot be identified.
Many standard jobs can be completed within the same day. Timing depends on the vehicle, transmission access method, initial checks, data logging and whether calibration revisions are required. Some controllers require bench access rather than programming through the diagnostic port, which can add time.
Send the year, make, model, engine, transmission details if known, current modifications and what you would like improved. We can confirm ZF 8HP support before booking.
